Remember the good old days, when getting out the door was as easy as grabbing your purse and keys, sliding shoes on, opening the door and leaving?

Now that you have children, mornings are jam-packed with tasks that are all potential speed bumps.

It’s well established that children do best when they know what to expect. This means creating routines and consistency is essential to a properly functioning household.

Now that school is back in session, it’s the perfect time to dust off all the rules and routines we had happily tucked away in the deepest corners of our minds for summer.

Here are 7 tips — plus a few helpful items — to get your kids to school/daycare on time.

1. Prep the Night Before

In other words, cover all your bases (or as many as possible) the night before, so you have less to worry about in the trenches of hectic school mornings.

Lay out clothes for the next morning (involve your kiddos if they like to choose their outfits), set the table for breakfast after clearing off dinner, pack up lunch boxes and snacks… You can even pick out clothing for the entire week ahead (see below for product recommendations). Anything you can prep the night before will free up brain space and help avoid crises and meltdowns at crunchtime.

Check out our school lunch planner to go the extra mile.

2. Add in Me-Time in the Mornings

Always give yourself more time than you think you need, even if it means giving up those last 30 minutes of sleep.

I personally like to wake up before my kids so that I can wake myself up and get ready in peace. In turn, it then allows me to fully focus on getting my children dressed, fed and ready for the day, which really helps our overall morning flow.

This usually comes with the need to discipline myself: I go to bed earlier to wake up earlier. No more hitting that snooze button.

3. Set up All the Timers

“15 minutes ’til we have to get out the door to catch the bus…

5 minutes… [phone timer goes off]. Time to put our shoes on and go!”

All hail timers!

Especially if you have kiddos who cannot yet read time, timers help everyone (grownups and little ones alike) stay mindful of the exact time a task needs to be fully accomplished.

In our house, we use timers specifically to get dressed and to get a sense of when we need to get out the door, especially when we work with the MTA/bus schedule. I usually use my phone, but I also love the visual/analog countdown timers that are more intuitive for children: they feature a colored disc that slowly disappears to let them know time passes. See the list below for our favorite time-saving devices.

If visuals don’t work, consider making a morning playlist with upbeat, motivating songs that your children are familiar with. The music cues and song changes can guide them through the different tasks they have to accomplish throughout the morning. For example, when they hear “Here Comes the Sun,” it’s time to get dressed.

4. Gamify the Morning

More specifically, make it a race.

I have never seen my children get dressed as quickly as when I tell them they need to have all their clothes on by the time I am done brushing my teeth.

The power of play is really a thing of wonders!

5. Reward them with “Free Time”

Nothing motivates my children to get ready like the reward of “free time,” where they get carte blanche in the activities they get to do before we head out.

During free time, my boys are allowed to play whatever they want, as long as they are dressed and ready to go. They sometimes choose TV (we only allow educational shows, like Story Bots or Sesame Street), but more often than not, they opt for free play (with legos or stuffed animals), drawing or reading (video games are off limits). The timer comes back out for “free time” so they know they only have a specific amount of time before having to put their shoes on, grab their backpacks and get out the door.

*Be careful, here… there are kids who will wake up extra early so they can hurry and get ready for school so they have extra time to watch iPad, for example. Some of them will get up earlier and earlier…. and that’s not what we’re going for.

6. Use Checklists

A simple checklist can do wonders for a smooth morning (or anytime!) routine. In our home, we use a whiteboard that can easily be updated as needed, and I set it outside my kids’ bedrooms so it’s the first thing they see when they open their doors in the morning.

Since my kids are older, I wrote out their morning checklist (i.e. brush your teeth; get dressed for school; put your jammies in the hamper; turn off your bedroom light; etc.) but if your children don’t yet know how to read, you can draw or print out pictures of each task as well.

We’re also big fans of the visual morning charts that use velcro tabs. Once your child is done with a task, they simply flip the tab up, and voila! If you feel in the mood for a little DIY project, you can make your own here.

7. Keep Breakfast Simple

Mornings are not the time to reinvent yourself as a chef. Keep your little ones’ breakfasts as easy as possible: peanut butter and banana toasts, minute oatmeal, toaster waffles (multigrain), avocado toasts, yogurt and granola are some of our favorite options to nourish our kiddos while staying on track.

Our Favorite Items to Keep Mornings Moving

Hatch Rest ~ $70

This ok-to-wake clock has been amazing to help get my children out of bed without too much fussing. Once they see that the light turns yellow and hear the birds chipping, they know it’s time to emerge and get ready for the day.

Visual Timer Clock ~ $ Varies

These visual timers feature colored discs to let your kiddos easily know how much more time they have to complete a task. If your children still don’t recognize their numbers, you can opt for versions that feature animals instead of numbers or that color code each time.

Kizik Sneakers ~ $69

With their hands-free design, Kizik sneakers are the easiest shoes to slide on — no laces or velcro to mess around with. Seriously, the transition out the door has never been easier. My kids have been wearing them every day for a year, and they’re still as good as new!

Wall Hooks ~ $ varies

Make your entryway kid and school friendly. We use magnetic hooks to secure our kids’ backpacks on our door so it’s easy for them to grab them as we head out for the day. Similarly (and not pictured here), we have coat hangers at their level so they can be as independent as possible on their way out.

Dry Erase Whiteboard ~ $6

Use a dry erase whiteboard like this one to jot down your kids’ morning checklist. It’s magnetic so you can put it on your fridge, or simply set it somewhere they’ll see it when they wake up.

Chore Charts ~ $17

These reusable to-do lists feature a sliding check box. Once your kids are done with a task, they can slide it to reveal the checkmark and feel super accomplished (I know it’d bring me a lot of joy…).

Weekly Clothes Organizer ~ $14

Get all the outfits ready the Sunday before the school-week with this handy hanging organizer.

That’s it! Let us know your favorite tips, tricks and items for getting out the door on time each morning — leave us a comment below.

Cheers! ~ Charlene

Summer is finally upon us and we’re stoked! To celebrate the season of sunshine, our team put together this fun Love List filled with our current favorite shows, books, self-care items, accessories, summertime must-haves and more. We hope you enjoy and find something you love ❤. Happy Summer!

TV Shows

Succession ~ Max

If you’re not watching this series, now in its fourth season, you should be. Reportedly based on the real-life media-mogul Murdoch family, this series is equal parts drama and dark comedy. Though I can’t say I find any of the characters particularly likable, the ever-changing dynamics, alliances and hierarchy among them is fascinating and intriguing.

BEEF ~ Netflix

What happens when road rage turns into a complete manic-obsessive spiral? Watch BEEF to find out. As it explores anger, depression and humanity in all its flaws and glories, this limited series is nerve-jangling, amusing and heart-warming all at once. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong are absolutely phenomenal — as is the soundtrack.

Books

The Unlikely Village of Eden ~ $17

This touching and raw memoir by Emma Nadler details her journey in caring for her child, Eden, born with an incredibly rare genetic condition. This book is perfect for all parents and caregivers; it’s a beautiful reminder that life doesn’t always (or perhaps ever?) go to plan, and that it’s okay (necessary, even) to lean on your village, and ask for and accept help.

Demon Copperhead ~ $18

Kingsolver’s powerful storytelling delves into the neglected corners of present-day Appalachian Mountains, where Damon Fields, nicknamed Demon Copperhead, navigates a challenging life from foster care placements that resemble work camps. The novel portrays Demon’s unwavering resilience as he faces hunger, cruelty, loss, and the devastating impact of the OxyContin epidemic, all while maintaining his profound love for his homeland.

Self-Care

Iris&Romeo Best Skin Days SPF

An SPF that also gives you a youthful glow? Yes, please. Best Skin Days has become a staple in my morning skincare routine. I love the slightly whipped feel of the lotion, and my skin is left looking dewy and healthy.

Ceremonia Gave Beach Waves

Beach waves on fleek. This salt texture spray by Ceremonia is giving summer.

LumaGlow LED Light Therapy Wand ~ $124

The LumaGlow LED Light Therapy Wand is a game-changer for skincare enthusiasts. Its compact design and versatile functionality make it easy to incorporate into your beauty routine. The wand’s red and blue light therapy targets acne, fine lines, and wrinkles, leaving the skin looking radiant and rejuvenated.

Kids

Kizik sneakers ~ $69

Got an independent tot on your hands? Kizik shoes have a hands-free design that makes it easy for children to put them on and take them off without any grownup help — the transition out the door has never been easier. My kids have been wearing them every day for a year, and they’re still as good as new!

Rockin’ BLINKS PJs

Made from Pima Cotton, Rocking’ BLINKS sleepwear is so buttery soft, you’ll wish the PJs came in adult sizes. Each set, which are all gender neutral, come with a card with specific sleeping information to help you understand sleep (and its challenges) at your child’s age. The company was founded by Lola Sanchez Liste, sleep consultant, mom of two and Charlene’s neighbor. 😉

Clothes & Accessories

Garnet Hill Asian Wrap Organic Shortie PJs ~ $69

Soft as butter and 100% organic cotton, these Asian-wrap PJs are my go-to for staying cool at night this summer. These PJs are super high-quality and last forever.

Lucy & Yak Jumpsuits ~ $varies

There’s never a better time than summer to add a little pop of color to your wardrobe. Lucy & Yak jumpsuits are a delightful blend of style, playfulness, comfort, and sustainability. Plus, we love their inclusive sizing, which ensures a perfect fit for everyone. The kind of item you’ll keep reaching for again and again.

Koolaburra (by Ugg) sandals ~ $65

Want to feel like you’re walking on clouds? Then slip these on your feet. No, I’ve never walked on clouds, but if I did — I assure you this is what it would feel like. Soooo comfortable and super cute to boot, these Koolaburra sandals will be your new summertime favs. Trust me.

Scala Visor ~ $32

Protect your face from the sun while keeping your mom bun. This visor from Scala has an adjustable velcro enclosure and wide coverage… and dare we say, is stylish?

Sezane Baskets ~ $varies

Baskets and woven bags are all the rage this year, and we are loving it. So get your picnic chic on for all your outings – kids or no kids. We love the selection at French brand Sezane.

Pepper Strapless Bra ~ $60

Small-chested women know the struggle of finding a strapless bra that fits. Enters Pepper, a bra company that caters specifically to small breasts. This bra is supportive, comfortable and lifting. If you need a little more support, try this Meg-approved wireless bra.

Beach & Summer Essentials

CoolCabanas Beach Tent ~ $190

We’ve had our CoolCabanas tent for two years now. It’s held up really nicely and makes us feel like we’re part of an exclusive beach club. Plus, when the wind picks up, we’re the only ones whose tent doesn’t go flying all over the place.

JBL Clip 3 Speaker ~ $50

Bring the party to your day trips at the beach. This portable speaker is waterproof and you can clip it on your beach bag or backpack to keep it secure.

Supergoop Lip Screen ~ $22

Don’t forget to protect your lips this summer against harmful sun rays. We like how light the Supergroup lip screen feels when applying.

Yeti Can Insulator ~ $25

You know that feeling when you take a sip of your seltzer only to realize it’s warm and completely flat? Get yourself a Yeti insulator so you never encounter that problem ever again. You’re welcome.

Outdoor Illuminated Sphere ~ starts at $32

These LED globes are so unique and a great way to brighten up any space. Put them on your patio, in your garden, by the pool… and wait for the compliments to roll in!

That’s it! Let us know if there’s anything else YOU can’t live without during the summer months.

Cheers!

Our team speaks often about consuming screens and digital media more intentionally (in fact, we even have a screen time challenge of sorts, which you can join anytime if you want or feel like you need a bit of a reset).

But that doesn’t mean we don’t actually watch TV, play video games or avoid media altogether. No. Rather, we choose the entertainment we consume — what we watch, play or listen to — with care.

What’s our criteria, you ask? We go after shows, books and podcasts that make us laugh, cry, feel all the feels; games that make us think and move and that have the potential to bring people together; books that teach us or help us escape the mundane (and the mounting pile of laundry waiting for us in the next room).

Below is a selection of entertainment media — both new releases and oldies but goodies — we are loving right now. We hope you find something you and your family enjoy!

TV Shows

Parenthood ~ Hulu or Peacock

Don’t laugh, but I had never watched Parenthood until I caught COVID over the holiday break, and not only did it save me from sheer isolation boredom, I got obsessed! I watched all 6 seasons in 2 weeks (24 episodes per season… yes, I’m bragging). Parenthood is the OG “This Is Us” — a heartfelt depiction of parenthood and family in all their beauty and complexities. It also was ahead of its time in showing what having a kid on the spectrum could look and feel like. ~ Charlene

Shrinking ~ Apple TV+

If you enjoy Ted Lasso, you’ll love Shrinking. The show, which explores what it means to tackle grief with a mix of pain and humor, may be a good replacement for therapy… I kid, I kid. But it’s definitely given me a few cathartic cries. Jason Segel and Harrison Ford make a fantastic duo. ~ Charlene

Firefly Lane ~ Netflix

Back in January when I was recovering from surgery, I stumbled across this show on Netflix. It’s a touching story that follows a set of best friends, Kate and Tully, through their early teen years when they first meet, all the way through adulthood. Heartwarming, hilarious and everything in between, Firefly Lane made my recovery time fly by. Now if only I were friends with this pair in real life… ~ Marissa

The Vow ~ HBO

The Vow is a two-season docuseries on HBO detailing the lives and experiences of several former members of the cult, NXIVM. If you’re a true-crime junkie like me, you’ll find this series fascinating. I was completely awestruck at how leader Keith Raniere gained total control (physically, sexually, mentally and emotionally) of his followers, eventually culiminating in several of the female members being branded with his initials. Eye-opening and chilling, The Vow helped me gain insight into cult culture, and the psychology behind how cult victims and leaders come to be. ~ Marissa

Podcasts

Baptiste Power Yoga Podcast

I have recently started doing yoga again regularly and am obsessed with this podcast — it’s the perfect mix of challenging, athletic, and mindful at just the right tempo. Since the classes are “real” studio classes, you truly get the full experience at home. ~ Brit

The Mel Robbins Podcast

Words cannot describe how impactful this podcast has been on my life. She covers heavy hitting, big picture topics that help you understand your past and how it impacts the person you’ve become. Start here, with “Why are Adult Friendships So Hard“. ~ Meg

The Chalene Show

The Chalene Show is a mixed bag of lifestyle, self-help, fitness and really, just everything. It’s what I turn to when I’m in the mood for something light, but interesting.

Start here, with “Becoming Epic with Aprille Franks“. All I can say is that I’ve listened to this ep 3 times. ~ Meg

Games

Mario Kart

Honestly, I love playing Mario Kart with my kiddos. It’s great fun for everyone; you can adjust the difficulty settings to cater to your children’s ages; it’s a nice opportunity to introduce some friendly (and healthy) competition; and if you were a gamer back in the day (in the words of Taylor Swift, “hi, it’s me, I’m the problem it’s me”), it’s a seriously fun dose of nostalgia. You can even can play online, remotely, with others — allowing you to connect and have some long-distance fun with cousins, grandparents and friends who live far away. ~ Charlene

The NYT Daily Mini

The Daily Mini has become part of my morning ritual. My alarm goes off; I hit snooze; I open the NYT Games App; solve the Daily Mini Crossword puzzle; check out the Leaderboard to see how my friends did; and kick myself for not putting on my glasses before solving said puzzle. The Mini keeps me sharp (or at least it makes me feel sharp) and is another great way to connect with friends. Oh, and it’s actually more exhilarating to tie than it is to win… ~ Charlene

Books

Attention Span, by Gloria Mark

I listened to this book while I was participating in our team’s 10-day screen time reset, and it is incredibly eye-opening. A deep dive in how the digital information economy has been and is affecting our attention from every angle, this book is for anyone interested in reclaiming some “personal space.” FYI, if you’re not as interested in all the science (it’s fascinating!), Part 3 of the book is the tactical section with tips for improving your attention (without asking that you move to the woods, drown your smartphone, or live in the 19th century). ~ Brit

Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, by Oliver Burkeman

Smartly described by one reviewer as “a much-needed reality check on our culture’s crazy assumptions around work, productivity, and living a meaningful life,” this book is a refreshing, wry, and highly philosophical addition to the stacks of books that purportedly claim to help us “do it all.” I willl 100% be revisiting this book, it’s a keeper. ~ Brit

Raising Antiracist Children – A Practical Parenting Guide, by Britt Hawthorne

As a white mother raising two white boys, I want to start having deeper conversations about race, racism and inclusivity. In this practical book, Britt Hawthorne put together an impressive collection of resources — jam-packed with anecdotes, tips, tools and interactive activities — for anyone (especially parents and educators) who wants to help build a more just and sustainable world for the generations to come. ~ Charlene

The Body Keeps Score, by Bessel van Der Kolk

This book was a game-changer for me. I now understand that the body and the mind are FULLY connected – not what we are taught in western culture/medicine. It’s so good to finally understand how trauma you’ve suffered has damaged your body and your health, and how to move forward from it. The author uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust. ~ Meg

Fellowship Point, by Alice Elliot Dark

This is one of those you’re-so-sad-when-it’s-over books. An epic story of friendship, feminism, art, aging, community, and nature (among other things…), there’s a good reason critics called this brick of a book an “utterly engrossing, stunning masterpiece.” I honestly can’t wait to read it again. ~ Brit

Bookshop.org

I am late to the party here, but Bookshop.org allows you to purchase books online and support your local bookstore — it’s a wonderful alternative for anyone looking to move away from Amazon. ~ Brit

Now that the excitement of the holidays is behind us, winter just doesn’t hold the same charm anymore. As we roll into February, the temperatures are getting bitterly frigid and the days remain short — a perfect storm for the winter blues to settle in.

I don’t know about you, but a little retail therapy can go a long way to warm my heart when the sky is moody and it’s too cold (to motivate myself) to venture out. Who’s with me?

We typically don’t buy into the culture of consumerism at Lucie’s List, but sometimes — and especially when that blah winter feeling won’t quit — you just have to treat yourself. We’ve put together a list of products that have made us happy and/or rocked our world during this chilly season. Whether it’s an air fryer, a pretty jigsaw puzzle or some clothes that bring summer to our gloomy days, we hope you’ll find something on this list that will make you smile.

Air Fryer ~ $varies

Much like the Instant Pot, an Air Fryer has once again changed my life. It’s so easy to cook food quickly and with such little mess (chicken nuggets in 10 minutes instead of 35? Yes, please!), now I wonder how I lived without it. ~ Meg

Athleta Balance Jacket ~ $119

This soft zip-up jacket has become my favorite thing of the winter. It’s perfect for when you need something light and super comfy around the house. Also, it goes with everything in my closet. ~ Meg

Lorimer State Bag Fanny Pack ~ $90

My favorite day-to-day bag! I love that I can wear this cross-body or as a fanny pack. It has two separate compartments, so I can organize it effectively: one side for keys, wallet, chapstick, and all my essentials; and the other side for my kids’ stuff (epi pen, bandaids & hair ties). ~ Marissa

Mini Pilates Ball ~ $12

This mini ball is a fantastic exercise tool to strengthen core, abdomen muscles and pelvic floor. Add it to your at-home workout artillery for <$15. ~ Meg

Farm Rio Clothing ~ $varies

If you need to add a little (or a lot of) color to your wintery days, check out Farm Rio. This Brazilian sustainable brand’s motto is “dress in happiness,” and boy, do they deliver. Every piece is cheerful, exotic and full of life. ~ Charlene

I’ll Show Myself Out, Jessi Klein ~ $18

This smart essay collection centered on motherhood reads like Amy Pohler and Tina Fey — it’s snarky, relatable, laugh-out-loud funny, and dead on. If you can listen to it, Jessi Klein reads the audiobook herself; her narration is 👌. ~Brit

Athleta Pranayama Wrap ~ $89

This slouchy wrap is an everyday staple for me — I’ve had a piece like this for years and tried tons of different brands… this is the hands-down winner. I literally bought three of them. ~Brit

Jigsaw Puzzles ~ $21

I have a newfound (or renewed) love for puzzles. They’re a great way to spend a snowy or rainy afternoon without relying on screens. Plus, I find them relaxing and even meditative. ~ Charlene

Rhone Loungewear for Men ~ $79

I bought a Rhone loungewear set for my husband for Christmas, and he’s been living in it. It’s butter soft and roomy — perfect for lazy Sunday mornings. I also love that they offer a waste-free alternative to shipping: their packaging is completely reusable, and their shipping partner, Olive, will come to your place to pick it back up. ~ Charlene

Theragun Mini ~ $159

Sore muscles begone. This little guy targets those stiff & painful areas in a way you simply can’t do on your own. Bonus: it’s small enough to travel with. ~ Marissa

Tower 28 Mascara ~ $20

This mascara checks all the boxes: it defines and elongates every single lash; it’s gentle enough for sensitive eyes; and it’s nontoxic. All of Tower 28’s makeup line has a been a win for me so far, especially their tinted sunscreen foundation and their lip gloss. ~ Charlene

Vuori Joggers ~ $98

These ultra-comfy joggers have quickly become part of my daily uniform. I love how they fit and feel – and they’re so cute paired with a plain t-shirt & sneakers. ~ Marissa

Olaplex Hair Repair Treatment ~ $62

I only recently started to embrace my curls. But after a lifetime of hair straightening, my locks needed a little help to get the bounce back. This treatment has been a game changer, and I’ve gotten so many compliments about my hair. If only I could go back in time and tell my 14-year-old self to drop the straightening iron… ~ Charlene

We hope you find something on this love list to help get you through the doldrums of winter. Brighter days are on their way!

Cheers!

Every New Year’s we hear friends and family sharing resolutions and promises that amount to any variation on the general goal of “being better.”

I’ll tell you what my resolution is whenever I think of it… probably in July. Until then, can we parents agree that things are (still) crazy, and it’s okay to just take each day as it comes?

Here’s to 2022: may it be better than 2021 and 2020. Please. Just, please!

Here are our team’s picks for books, podcasts, shows, newsletters, and treats to ring in the new year. See you out there, friends — stay warm, safe, and sane.

Books

This is The Story of a Happy Marriage, Ann Patchett ~ $15

This collection of essays from Ann Patchett has everything: humor, love, friendship, family, and all the rest. It will make you laugh, smile, cheer, wonder, and think. *Patchett reads the audio version, and listening to her read her own work is a treat all its own. ~ Brit

Sapiens, Yuval Noah Harare ~ $26

If you missed this when it came out a few years ago, you have to check it out — it reads like a sweeping long-form podcast that is history, but also anthropology, science, psychology, economics, religious studies, sociology, and everything else. It’s like the ultimate academic take on everything since the dawn of human life… for the non-academic. ~ Brit

Liane Moriarty audiobooks ~ $varies

I hadn’t read anything by Liane Moriarty since Big Little Lies, but after reading Farhad Manjoo’s case for listening to her books, I tried some out and I’m *hooked. As he writes: “Although her prose is unflashy and her subject matter seemingly pedestrian — Moriarty writes tightly plotted domestic dramas about middle- and upper-middle-class suburbanites — her observations are so precise, her characters’ psychology so well realized that I often find her stories burrowing deep into my brain and taking up long, noisy residence there.” ~ Brit

Podcasts

One Bad Mother

A non-judgmental parenting website? Because we’re not all born natural mothers and could use a little laugh (or two) — and way less judging. Co-hosted by Theresa Thorn and Biz Ellis, One Bad Mother reminds us that, regardless of the circumstances (the genius moments and the parenting fails), we are doing a great job. ~ Charlene

Heavyweight

Did you ever wish you could change the past? In his podcast, Heavyweight, humorist Jonathan Goldstein goes down memory lane with his guests to help them resolve moments from the past they wish they could change. This podcast is about turning points — about getting answers to long-lasting questions; it reckons with the past, and does so with a perfect balance of storytelling, humor and emotion. ~ Charlene

Shows

Yellowjackets

Be prepared: this Showtime series is a bit dark, but my goodness is it addictive! For those, like me, who came of age in the ’90s, you’ll love the music and throwbacks. The show weaves back and forth between the past and present day, as it follows a high school girls’ soccer team trying to survive out in the wilderness after their plane suddenly crashes on the way to Nationals. I won’t spill all the tea, but get ready for a bit of sweet nostalgia, mixed with psychological thrills, terror and gore, and a hefty dose of drama. ~ Marissa

The Sex Lives of College Girls

Mindy Kaling’s newest series — an homage to friendship and self-discovery — follows four roommates from different walks of life navigating their new freedom on a prestigious campus (and all the endlessly entertaining shenanigans that ensue). It’s bright and fun and honest; and the cast (including Pauline Chalamet!) is stellar. ~ Charlene

Queer Eye

The moment we’ve all been waiting for — The Fab Five are back for a new season of Queer Eye! So grab your box of tissues and get ready to cry your eyes out ’cause they’re back in full force with hot tips and makeovers that are sure to bring out all the feels. ~ Meg

Encanto

If you haven’t seen this yet, what have you been doing for the last three weeks? The latest from Disney & Lin-Manuel Miranda is well worth a watch — it’s visually stunning, the songs are amazing (duh), and the story is sweet and magical. ~ Brit

Newsletters and Social Media

CSAPunch

CSApunch, dentist by day, TikTok sensation by night. Her Instagram account is for the aging millennials who remember the slow agony of modem connection and glory of AOL aim chats, and who are a tad nostalgic about all things 90s. Also, she’s just as obsessed with Encanto as we are. Follow her, she’ll bring you joy. ~ Charlene

Yoga with Adriene

The beginning of the year is often ripe with resolutions, new routine and month-long challenges. This one, though, stands out for helping you connect to yourself with purpose while also decreasing anxiety and building muscle tone and stamina. It comes with a daily email — plus, it’s free, good for beginners and advanced yogis alike, and on-going (you can start it any time of the year). ~ Charlene

Cup of Jo

Cup of Jo is the ultimate lifestyle destination — for decor, style, food, travel and relationships. Well, now you can get it all straight to your inbox, nicely packaged in an email filled with the site’s latest and greatest (along with jokes, fun facts and wishlists). ~ Charlene

Self-Care and Self-Gifts

2022 planner ~ $varies

For those of us who still get our planning fix the old-fashioned way… ~ Brit

Madewell Quilted Scuff Slippers ~ $29

These cute indoor slips are super soft and cozy but still give your feet room to breathe. I’ve been living in mine since September… bonus: the faux fur is made from recycled materials! ~ Brit

Hum Kids Toothbrush ~ $15

Ok not very self-care at first glance, but hear me out. I fought with my kiddos about brushing their teeth. A LOT. Like, enough that it put a serious damper on my family’s good bedtime vibes. With this toothbrush, we no longer argue: my boys love brushing their teeth, thanks to little monsters guiding them through the process (so I don’t have to). If that’s not self-care, then I don’t know what is. ~ Charlene

Elemis Pro-Collagen line ~ $varies

Elemis offers spa sessions in bottles. Seriously, their pro-collagen line is divine and restorative and luxurious. A treat for all mamas in want of a little pick-me-up for their skin. ~ Charlene

Faux Olive Tree ~ $46+

Recommended by many home decor influencers, this faux olive tree is as realistic as it gets. Comparable in pricing to the Studio Magee Target option, it offers fuller branches and has more heft in the trunk. ~ Melissa

Rocksbox ~ $21/month

Stitch Fix, but for jewelry — this subscription box lets you discover new looks and designs without having to commit to full prices. Each month, you get three pieces of jewelry that you can send back or, if you come across something you love, you can pay extra to keep. Brilliant! ~ Meg

Revision Skincare Intellishade Anti-Aging Moisturizer ~ $76

This tinted moisturizer seriously makes my skin glow. It glides on so nicely, offers SPF 45 protection, and with its blend of anti-aging ingredients, such as vitamin C and peptides, makes skin appear smoother, fresher and younger. ~ Marissa

After forcing us to spend the last (almost) two years in some form of socially distanced lockdown, the pandemic has changed the way we live forever — from our work environment to our social lives to the way we wind down and take care of ourselves. More than ever before, people understand the importance of slowing down and of doing things for them.

If you ask us, this holiday season is the perfect time to practice a little self-love — because there’s no better way to end the year than by doing (or buying) things that makes us feel good and that ease our feelings of stress and anxiety. And if you’re anything like us, you have found some sort of comfort (and escape) in media and self-care. We’re talking TV shows, podcasts, books, newsletters and — yessss — self-indulging treats.

From binge-worthy series that will make you feel all the feels to podcast titles that will guide you through the toughest moments of parenting to the comfiest slippers ever, here’s a list of things that will help your mind flee, even if just for an hour, and help you hit the reset button right before 2022.

Books

Going There, by Katie Couric ~ $19

Salacious and sweet, this Katie Couric tell-all is a true page-turner. Listen to it on Audible to hear her narrate it herself — even better! ~ Marissa

Please Don’t Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes, by Phoebe Robinson ~ $16

A smart and funny collection of essays on very timely topics, ranging from the pandemic to the BLM movement and so much more. A must-read. ~ Charlene

You Were Born for This, Chani Nicholas ~ $16

This book is a great primer for astrology newbies who’d like to know a little bit more about themselves and their potentials. Going over our sun, moon and rising signs (and how they all interact with one another), Chani Nicholas’s book offers a portal to self-discovery and self-acceptance. ~ Charlene

The One and Only Ivan, Katherine Applegate ~ $6

This book has been out for more than a decade, but I just discovered it — I recently finished reading this out loud with my kindergartener and it was so fun to enjoy together. It’s beautifully written, introspective, and overall such a touching story. ~ Brit

Podcasts

SmartLess podcast

A Podcast with no goals and soooo many jokes. In SmartLess, Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett make us feel like we’re just hanging out with them to chat about everything and anything. Surprise: each podcast features a mystery guest that only one of the hosts knows about (!). ~ Charlene

We Can Do Hard Things podcast

I’m a bit obsessed with author Glennon Doyle (if you haven’t read Untamed, do yourself a favor and get it!). She hosts this podcast with her wife, Abby Wambach, and sister, Amanda. Each episode is like having intimate conversations with your best friends about HARD THINGS, sprinkled with a serious dose of humor, humility and a whole lot of “feel-good” vibes. ~ Marissa & Readers

Good Inside

Dr. Becky’s podcast (one of her many guidance offerings) is one of the most impactful podcasts for parents who are after tangible and effective tools to raise strong, confident children with compassion. Quick and to the point, Good Inside provides practical tips and tricks that will help you navigate the most challenging parts of parenthood. Dr. Becky also provides workshops on various topics and a weekly newsletter, and her IG page is filled with practical strategies in video format.

Series

Ted Lasso

The ultimate feel good show of 2021 — Ted Lasso is warm and hilarious and charming and filled with optimism and real emotions. If you’re not familiar with the premise yet: a small football team coach from Kansas, played brilliantly by Jason Sudeikis, is hired to coach a professional soccer team in England… despite knowing absolutely nothing about soccer. ~ Charlene & Readers

Maid

Based on a true story, this limited series tackles emotional domestic abuse and the hardships of female poverty — and in doing so, it is both powerful and, many times, not easy to watch. Real-life mom-and-daughter duo, Andy McDowell and Margaret Qualley, are phenomenal. ~ Charlene & Readers

Only Murders in The Building

Are you obsessed with true crime series? If so, you will enjoy this show, which follows three strangers who share a love for true crime and find themselves wrapped up in one. The character dynamic between Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez is unique, and the humor pitch-perfect. ~ Charlene

Sex Education

Following the sexual (mis)adventures of a group of teenagers from all walks of life, Sex Education is honest, non-judgmental and colorful. It does not treat sex with kids gloves and takes on toxic masculinity by making room for its male protagonists to show their vulnerabilities fully and without stigma. The series, which has 3 seasons, gets better and better, and you’ll undoubtedly get attached to the characters (all of them). ~ Charlene

Newsletters

About Time

A newsletter crafted by Kaity Velez and Jessica Pallay (“two gestationally geriatric friends learning how to get older”), About Time talks about all things hormones, aging, relationships, and all the awesome, not-so awesome and weird things that happen once you turn 40 (including missing periods and the impossible quest of finding underwear made for the 40-and-over ladies among us). ~ Charlene

Tangle

Can’t quite keep up with all the news out there? Tangle summarizes the best arguments from across the political spectrum, all packaged nicely in an independent, non-partisan email. Readers say it is “reflective, nuanced and self-aware.” ~ Meg

Not Safe For Mom Groups

A stigma-free community where moms can express their rawest thoughts and ask their most pressing questions, without judgment. You’ll get to be part of conversations that push the boundaries usually attributed with motherhood — right in your inbox. ~ Charlene

What The Elle, by Ellevest

A newsletter dedicated to money and career for women? YES, PLEASE!! What The Elle by Ellevest will send you everything you need to manage your money and career — from tips and advice from experts to the latest news in the financial world and so much more. ~ Charlene

Self-Care and Self-Gifts

Beautycounter Think Big All-in-One Mascara ~ $27

No exaggeration — this is THE best mascara I have ever tried. It actually does what every other mascara claims: thickens and lengthens lashes. Bonus: it’s ingredients are clean and nourishing. ~ Marissa

Colorfulkoala Leggings ~ $29

Better than Lululemon – although I love them too 😉 – Colorfulkoala makes an AMAZING legging! At $29, you’ll want to buy all the prints! Just make sure to get their 75% polyester/25% spandex blend (stay away from nylon, in my opinion that style doesn’t feel as nice). ~ Melissa

Target Suede Sleepers ~ $20

I’ve been buying these slippers for years. They are a serious dupe for the Ugg slipper ($89). And at $19, they are a great value… and in my opinion a better quality build. ~ Melissa

Madewell Threader Bar Earrings ~ $28

These earrings are so awesome — they can look the part for any kind of outfit. I like that they add a bit of flare while still being light as a feather. ~ Brit

Hannacure All-in-One Facial Set ~ $110

This mask will give you the wildest skincare experience of your life (you really have to go through it to understand — but if you need visuals, google “Hanacure and Drew Barrimore”). Plus, it will instantly give you glowing, brighter, tighter skin. ~ Charlene

‘Tis the season… to give your home a little holiday touch.

We’re not particularly big on decorating for… well, anything (it’s just another thing to add to the to-do list that I’ll inevitably have to clean up…), BUT… for the holidays, we do it up.

Grab your warm (or better yet, adult) beverage, crank up the Crooners, light a good candle, and get yourself ready to deck the walls inside and out. Here are our favorite decor items for the table; seasonal kitchen furnishings; festive candles, scents, and lights; wall decorations; entryway flare; kids gear; and cozy holiday staples.

We ❤ fall so. very. much. The season when we get to slow down, curl up on the couch under a fuzzy blanket with a hot cup of tea while binge-watching our favorite fall movies, and, well, nest with a few decorative items that warm up our spaces (and our hearts). The joke with our team is that we have trouble finishing picks for these roundups because we get so sidetracked shopping for them ourselves 😂. Stay focused, people!

Adorable, right?

As the leaves change colors, there’s simply nothing like transitioning your home to make it cool and cozy for autumn. From candle holders to leafy garlands to a pumpkin-shaped waffle maker, here are some of our favorite fall-themed items to give your home a warm, seasonal makeover.

Faux Fireplace

I had two old brick fireplaces that were no longer usable. Last year, I bought 2 electric faux-fireplaces to add ambiance AND heat those spaces and love them so much!! One day, we’ll go for the full gas-insert upgrade (it’s expensive!), but for now, these work beautifully.

PS: my favorite brand is DuraFlame.

Remember “hot vax summer”? More people were getting vaccinated every day, Covid case numbers were declining, and a return to normalcy felt like it was around the corner. The promise of a semblance of pre-Covid life felt so close — and as such, most of us, on some level, lowered our inhibitions.

But then, the Delta variant happened, effectively putting the kibosh on all our hopes and plans.

As the CDC revised mask and social distancing recommendations, our editorial team wondered: how would we approach this unfortunate plot twist?

Trying to keep up with all the Covid developments is (still) a nightmare. Not only do things change on the daily, but finding reliable, evidence-based sources of information that also synthesize information and address parents’ concerns can be a challenge. To help you stay abreast of the latest Covid news and advice, we decided to directly prompt you to the experts.

Here are the resources our editorial team relies on every day to keep abreast of what’s happening — they’re all produced by crazy smart people who have expertise and experience, know what they’re talking about, boil down relevant topics and concerns, and link to original sources and citations. Even just following along with a couple of these accounts (by newsletter, on social media, etc.) can be a helpful strategy to stay sane, sort through the unfolding infodemic and navigate your next steps:

  1. Your Local Epidemiologist” – especially this post.
  2. Peds Doc Talk
  3. The Osterholm Update
  4. Emily Oster
  5. Dr. Monica Gandhi
  6. Jessica Malaty Rivera
  7. Anita Patel

Lucie McBride of The Atlantic said it well, “Reclaiming rational thought amid ongoing uncertainty can be vexingly difficult, yet it is crucial for our health. Parents must first absorb the scientific evidence on Delta. We must cross-check our internal narratives about our own kids against the facts of our local public-health landscape by checking in with trusted health-care professionals.”

Easier said than done, but an important reminder nonetheless. Good luck out there, parents. The one thing we know is true is that there are no easy decisions these days.
